Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat passed away at 63 on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat passed away on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. He was admitted in a private hospital in New Delhi where he breathe his last. He was 63. An advocate by profession, Gurudas Kamat was a commerce graduate from R.A. Podar College in Mumbai and had a law degree from the Government Law College, Mumbai. 

Political Journey: 

  • 1972: Stated his political journey as a student leader
  • 1976: He was appointed as the President of National Students' Union of India, Mumbai Unit
  • 1980: Appointed as General Secretary of Maharshtra Pradesh Youth Congress
  • 1984: He took the charge of President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress
  • 1987: He was appointed as the President of the Indian Youth Congress
  • 2003: Became the President of Mumbai Congress and held the position till 2008

Gurudas Kamat represented the following constituency: 

  • Member of the Parliament for the Mumbai North West constituency of Maharashtra in 2009
  • Represented Mumbai's North East constituency of Maharashtra in 1984, 1991, 1998 and 2004

He had also served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs with an additional charge of Minister of Communications and Information Technology during 2009 to 2011. In 2013, Kamat was appointed General Secretary All India Congress Committee and given charge of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and was also appointed as a member of the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the Indian National Congress.

Resignation:

In 2017, Kamat resigned from all positions that he held at the Indian National Congress. Despite his resignation, the Party continued to acknowledge him as the General Secretary of AICC.

Condoling Kamat’s demise, Congress leaders termed it an “irreparable loss” for the party.
