In a development with massive political ramifications, the CBI will seek custodial interrogation of P Chidambaram in the INX Media case. The agency will file an affidavit to this regard on Tuesday, Republic TV has learnt, even as the Delhi High Court has extended the interim protection from arrest that had been granted to Chidambaram till August 1.
Chidambaram had been questioned in connection with the case by the CBI for almost four hours on June 6. The case deals with alleged irregularities in clearances given for foreign investments in INX Media, a company promoted by Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea, while Chidambaram was the Finance Minister under the UPA.
The CBI had filed an FIR in matter in May 2017 for alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance that was granted to INX Media in 2007 for recieving an investment of Rs 305 crore.
The FIR also alleged that P Chidambaram's son Karti used his influence in the ministry to assist INX Media in seeking approval for an investment that had already been completed. Companies linked to Karti Chidambaram had allegedly received payment of Rs 10 lakh for facilitating FIPB clearance for INX Media.
Karti Chidambaram had been arrested by the CBI in the case on February 28 and granted bail on March 23. Both Chidambarams have denied allegations made by the CBI.
Speaking to Republic TV minutes after the newsbreak on Tuesday, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is representing Chidambaram in the case said:
"It's up to them (CBI) to say what they want. 'Going to file' means when it's filed, we'll deal with it."
Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr Subramanian Swamy said that custofial interrogation was essential for 'getting proper evidence.' He congratulate the ED and CBI for doing excellent work in the case.
