Shillong: IAF, EAC holds Air Fest to motivate youth to join service

The air fest was held at the Advance Landing Ground (ALG) in Upper Shillong to mark the diamond jubilee celebrations of the EAC and the 87th anniversary of IAF.

The Eastern Air Command (EAC) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) organised an Air Fest at Meghalaya's capital Shillong on Saturday. The show was held to motivate and inspire youths to join the armed forces and the IAF, in particular, said Group Captain Sachin Anand Khatra. The air fest was organised at the Advance Landing Ground (ALG) in Upper Shillong to mark the diamond jubilee celebrations of the EAC and the 87th anniversary of the Indian Air Force.

IAF's glitz air acts

The event also featured a performance by Sarang acrobatic team. Various activities like flypast of Russian-made Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft, Dornier aircraft, Sarang helicopters, Mi-17 helicopters, a static display of aircraft, slithering operation of IAF’s elite force Garud, display by Air Warriors Drill Team (AWDT) and performance by the Air Force Band were the highlights of the Air Fest. Group Captain Khatra informed that the acrobatic display team of the IAF was flying an advanced lightweight helicopter, which had been manufactured by the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Exhilarating experience

Interacting with the media about the fest, Khatra said, "With these air shows, we aim to motivate and inspire youths to join the Indian armed forces in general and the IAF in particular." He further said that the feeling and experience of the fest has been exhilarating. "The pilots were taken to the limits of their skills by performing this for the people here," he added.

An inspiration to serve the country

"Every year an air fest is organised by the EAC on the occasion of IAF Day. This fest educates us about many great things of the IAF, soldiers, equipment, and so on. We also get inspiration to serve our country," said KK Gupta, a local of Shillong. The occasion was also attended by Air Marshal RD Mathur and other top officers of IAF. The Air Force celebrated its 87th anniversary on October 8.
