Update at 1:25 PM: Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal has expressed discontent against 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Jagdish Tytler being present at Congress party event where Sheila Dikshit will take the office as the Delhi party chief.

"Congress has been saving him for 34 years. Today when he is sitting at Sheila Dikshit's event, it proves that Congress is against Sikhs and what his grandmother and father did, Rahul Gandhi is doing the same thing. I am not shocked that Rahul Gandhi is proving that they don't have any respect for the Sikh community. The Gandhi family has been responsible for harming the Sikh community and Punjab. There have been many proves that political patronage was given to Sajjan Kumar, now when he has been given life imprisonment, on the same day Rahul Gandhi is rewarding another accused (Kamal Nath). There have been eye-witnesses calling out the three Congress leaders but at the event likes of Jagdish Tytler are sitting on the stage and they are encouraging them," said Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal speaking to reporters.

Sheila Dikshit was appointed as the Delhi party unit head by Congress president Rahul Gandhi on January 10. Devender Yadav, Rajesh Lilothia and Haroon Yusuf were appointed as working presidents to assist the former Delhi chief minister.

Jagdish Tytler is named to be one of the main accused of the anti-Sikh riots in the Nanavati Commission report into the immediate aftermath of the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination on October 31, 1984.

The official report of the Nanavati Commission on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots found 'credible evidence' against the Congress, suggesting that he 'very probably' had a hand in organising the massacre along with other Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and newly-appointed Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath. However, due to lack of evidences against him, the government could not prosecute Tytler in the case.

On December 31 2018, Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was awarded a life sentence by the Delhi High Court in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, surrendered before the Karkardooma Court. The court directed that Kumar be sent to Mandoli jail in northeast Delhi. On December 17, the Delhi High Court had overturned the acquittal granted to Kumar by a trial court and awarded him a life sentence and a fine of Rs 5 lakh in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

As per official figures, 2,732 people died in the anti-Sikh riots. Several members of the Sikh community have expressed discontent against Jagdish Tytler and have demanded justice against him in the aftermath of the riots.
