Smriti Irani, Minister of Textiles and Women and Child Development, took a dig at the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently in an event held in Kolkata on August 31. During the 17th edition of Devi Awards, Irani said that in the 2019 general elections, her win against Rahul Gandhi was proof that she never treated the people of Amethi as vote bank. She further added that she does not believe in acting when in politics. Smriti Irani, without naming Rahul Gandhi stated that had she been acting, she would not be able to replace the 'family that has been ruling in Amethi for the last five decades'.
'When people go without food and you as a political leader stand on their shoulder and become the prime minister, that is not an aspect I take comfort in. Possibly because in five years I did not treat them as vote bank. I actually associated with them either as colleagues or family,' Irani said.
BJP leader, Smriti Irani made these remarks during the course of an event in Kolkata. To the questions asked during the event, Irani voiced her opinion by saying that she is passionate about the people of Amethi. As a consequence of the passion she imbibes, Irani has been working towards finding the solutions to the everyday problems faced by 25 lakh people living in Amethi. Irani confidently proclaimed that she stayed in touch with the local people despite not knowing if she will get a ticket from Amethi again.
Rahul Gandhi's hopes came shattering through the roof when BJP leader Smriti Irani, won the Lok Sabha election defeating the Congress President from Amethi. It came as a shock to many as Rahul has been the MP from Amethi since 2004. Political experts have often propounded that the actor turned politician had won favors in Amethi as a result of excessive campaigning and actual human interaction with the locals. Rahul Gandhi on the other hand, spent most of his time touring the country.
