SpiceJet technician dies in freak accident in Kolkata airport

A SpiceJet technician was killed after the landing gear door of the aircraft he was working on got "accidentally" shut at the airport here on Wednesday, a senior official said.

 A SpiceJet technician was killed after the landing gear door of the aircraft he was working on got "accidentally" shut at the airport here on Wednesday, a senior official said.

The accident happened at 1.45 am, according to an airport official. Rohit Pandey was doing maintenance work in right-hand main landing gear wheel well area of a Q400 aircraft which was parked in Bay No 32 at Kolkata airport on July 10. The hydraulic doors “inadvertently” got closed leaving Rohit Pandey trapped there. The landing-gear doors of the Bombardier Q400 aircraft had to be broken to rescue the victim but he was declared dead.

"The technician was carrying out maintenance on the landing gear of the Bombardier Q400 plane when the landing door accidentally got closed and he got stuck there," said the official at Kolkata airport.

SpiceJet's response to the incident was awaited. A complaint on "unnatural death" was filed at Airport police station, a senior police officer said. A police team visited the spot where the accident happened, the officer said, adding forensic experts will now collect evidence.

"Our officers have reached the spot. We are talking to other staffers of the airline who were present there. We are trying to understand whether it was a technical glitch or the result of someone's callousness," the officer said.

In 2015, an Air India service engineer was killed after he got sucked into the live engine of an Airbus A319 aircraft at Mumbai airport. The engineer, identified as Ravi Subramanium, was in his forties. The incident took place around 8.30 pm when the aircraft which was to operate the Mumbai-Hyderabad AI flight 619 was being pushed back from the parking bay before take off. The technician was supervising the push back when all of a sudden he was sucked into the engine, his body was later discovered by the airport authorities in a mutilated condition.
