Sri Lanka expresses deep concern over India-Pakistan tension, says stand with India in fight against terrorism

In the aftermath of Pulwama terror attack, Sri Lanka on Wednesday said that it was deeply concerned about the increasing tensions between India and Pakistan and asked the two nations to act in a manner that ensures the security, peace and stability of the entire region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has unequivocally condemned this terrorist attack in Pulwama and stands firmly in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. 

40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed in a suicide attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14, sparking outrage in the country.

Following the JeM attack, India bombed and destroyed JeM's biggest training camp in Balakot in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, about 80-km from the Line of Control (LoC) early Tuesday, killing a "very large number" of terrorists, trainers and senior commanders.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, Sri Lanka has requested India and Pakistan to act in a manner that ensures the security, peace and stability of the entire region.

"Sri Lanka strongly supports peace and stability in the South Asia region and all endeavours towards the diffusion of tensions including the resolution of bilateral problems through dialogue and building confidence," the statement added.

Earlier on February 15, Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe gave a statement condemning the terror attack on the CRPF in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.

"I strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack in Kashmir's Pulwama district — the worst ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. I express my condolences to PM Modi and the families of police officers who lost their lives," he had said.

On the wee hours of Tuesday, the Indian armed forces took revenge for the Pulwama terror attack by destroying and demolishing three terror bases of Jaish-e-Mohammed - which was behind the February 14 attack.

Conducting an operation at the pre-dawn on February 26, the Indian Air Force used 16 Mirage 2000, loaded with laser-guided bombs, and went inside the enemy's territory and struck the heart of terrorism. Three bases, including the one in Balakot, were ripped into pieces within 17 minutes.

• The strike at Balakot, which is 24 kilometres northwest of Muzaffarabad, took place between 3:45 am and 3:53 am. The locations hit in this strike were joint training camps of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.
• The strike at Muzaffarabad took place between 3:48 am and 3:55 am
• The strike at Chakoti took place between 3:58 am and 4:04 am
