At a place far away from the public gaze, staring in the eyes of Pakistan is one of the Forward Defence Locations (FDL) of the Indian Army, along the Line of Control in Rajouri sector which stands as an epitome of the pluralistic ethos of India.

The FDL, along the line of control, the imaginary line that divides India and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, is located at a place where only a handful of people get access to, and there stand a temple and a mosque next to each other.

"This is the last place on the Line of Control and ahead of this place are the areas illegally occupied by Pakistan, but we have made it sure that the mosque and the temple that stand here for ages continue to remain here," an army officer told Republic.

After visiting the place, Republic became the first television channel to have reached at the site on the FDL where this ancient temple and mosque stand together and the army has made it sure that despite hostilities from the Pakistani side and continuous ceasefire violations, the sanctity of the place is maintained.

"Whenever there are ceasefire violations from the Pakistani side, they target this place the most, but so far not a single bullet fired from their side could hit the temple and the mosque here, this is a clear message to Pakistan that they can never succeed in harming the pluralistic ethos of India" said the officer.

The officer maintained that despite this place being at one of the most hostile locations in the country, the army jawans make it sure that prayers are regularly held at both the places.

"We make sure that our Jawans maintain this place and even when heavy shelling is on, we light lamp and incense sticks at both these places," said the officer.

As this place is situated deep along the line of control, civilians are not allowed to come to this place, but people in the area are aware about the existence of this place.

"We have heard from our elders that there was one such place here that was being worshipped by the people of all religions, this place has now become out of bound for civilians but we are happy that our army is properly maintaining this place," said Ghulam Ahmed, a resident of Rajouri .

He said that places like these stand as a testimony to the fact that India and Indians believe in coexistence and no power in the world can divide Indians on communal lines.

"Pakistan which wants to divide the people of the country on the communal lines, must see this place and understand it for once and all that all its nefarious designs to divide this country are bound to fail," said Ahmed.
