With the #SareeTwitter trending on the micro-blogging platform, people have posted pictures of themselves wearing their favourite six-yard drape. One priceless gem on the trend comes from BJP leader and Sultanpur MP Maneka Gandhi. She has shared about a saree which has been woven into the story of India's freedom struggle.
Gandhi posted a picture on Twitter from the day of her son Varun Gandhi's wedding. It shows her standing beside newly-wedded Pilbhit MP and her daughter-in-law Yamini. She is seen wearing a pink saree that looks elegant, but Indians used to going all-out during weddings may find it a tad too simple. However, the saree is rich steeped with historical facts about freedom struggle as its yarns were woven with the threads of history itself.
As Maneka reveals, the cotton saree was woven by none other than former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru when he was in jail and is almost as old as our country itself. She also mentions that the saree worn by her daughter-in-law in the picture is an 'antique' one which was given to me by her mother-in-law (former PM Indira Gandhi) on her wedding day.
Another notable politician from the Nehru Gandhi family did not shy away from sharing a post on the #SareeTwitter trend. Congress General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra posted a picture from the morning puja from the day of her wedding with Robert Vadra, 22 years ago. In the picture, she can be seen donning a pink Benarasi saree.
