Hack:

  • The prosecution made a compelling case against the lone accused Shashi Tharoor in the Sunanda Pushkar case
  • It also made some chilling charges against Tharoor

During a hearing in the Sunanda Pushkar death case the prosecution on Tuesday made some chilling claims at the Rouse Avenue Court in New Delhi. Naming Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor as the lone accused in the case, the prosecution made allegations which lead one to believe that Sunanda Pushkar was tortured in her marriage. Below are the charges made by the prosecution in the case:

  1. The prosecution has alleged that mental and physical cruelty towards the victim forced her to take her life
  2. It says charges should be framed against lone accused Shashi Tharoor under abetment to suicide and domestic violence
  3. It also said that medical report indicates that the scuffle between the parties occurred during the last four days before her death
  4. The prosecution alleged that there were bruises on her body - on her arms and her legs
  5. As per the medical reports, the cause of death is poison and blunt force
  6. The report also said that there was an injection mark on her body
  7. Renu Das who is a doctor and the cousin of Pushkar is the witness who has claimed that she was subjected to cruelty and domestic violence

Shashi Tharoor named as lone accused

In 2018, the Delhi Police had named Shashi Tharoor as the lone accused in the case and charged him under Sections 498 A (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and Section 306 (abetment to suicide). A voluminous 3000-page chargesheet was also filed by the Delhi Police in the matter. Shashi Tharoor was granted bail in the case on July 7. Shashi Tharoor has consistently maintained that the charges against him are “preposterous” and “politically motivated” but the police investigation proves otherwise. Incidentally, the Delhi Police has also faced flak for its lackadaisical approach and for covering up the investigations.

Sunanda Pushkar's death

Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in the Leela hotel in New Delhi on January 17, 2014. Despite the 5-year delay, the commencement of the trial in the case could herald a new turn to the high profile case.
