In a massive relief for Shashi Tharoor, the Patiala House Court on Thursday granted him anticipatory bail on Rs 1 lakh surety. The court has granted bail to the Congress leader on conditions that he will not tamper with the evidence and shall not leave India without permission.

Earlier on Wednesday, the court listed the matter for hearing on Thursday. Delhi police, during the Wednesday hearing, said that they want Shashi Tharoor’s custody.

The Delhi police while objecting to the bail said that Tharoor is an influential person and can hamper the investigation.  The cops also said that they have two key witnesses and both of them are the domestic help of Tharoor.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor moved a Delhi court seeking anticipatory bail in the case related to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. The politician's plea was filed before Special Judge Arvind Kumar who sought Delhi Police's response and kept it for hearing at 10 am on Wednesday. Tharoor was earlier summoned as an accused by a magisterial court for the alleged offences of abetment of suicide and committing cruelty towards Pushkar.

In his plea filed through advocate Vikas Pahwa, Tharoor said the charge sheet has been filed without arrest and the SIT (special investigation team) has categorically stated that investigation has been concluded and no custodial interrogation is required.

On June 9, after Shashi Tharoor's counsel appeared before the Patiala House court after he was issued summons as an accused, Republic TV had revealed details of Tharoor's legal strategy which entailed a plan to move a bail application on the next date of hearing.

At that time, Tharoor's counsel had said that they would speak only after taking action or moving something before the court.

During the hearing on June 7, the judge had taken cognisance of the Delhi Police's chargesheet against Tharoor where charges had been admitted against him under IPC 306 (Abetment to suicide) and IPC 498 (Cruelty).

Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a suite of a five-star hotel in Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014. A number of investigative reports by Republic TV have highlighted the Delhi Police's shortcomings in the case prior to the chargesheet finally being filed.
