Sunny Deol: Kartarpur corridor will help maintain India-Pak peace

Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gurdaspur, Sunny Deol on Saturday expressed happiness after visiting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur through the landmark corridor and voiced his hope that the step would further help in maintaining peace between India and Pakistan. 

Speaking to the media, Deol said, "It was a really nice visit. I hope that the corridor further helps in maintaining peace (between India and Pakistan). This was ours beginning towards it."

Deol was a part of the first official 'jatha' which attended the inauguration ceremony of the Kartarpur Corridor in Pakistan on Saturday. Kartarpur Sahib Corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur district.

Taking to Twitter, Deol shared his experience: "It was very good. I wish this is the start of our peace." He further said, "It was a very special welcome." He also posted pictures of himself at the Gurudwara Kartapur Sahib in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the corridor from the Indian side while Imran Khan opened the route on the Pakistan side. India and Pakistan had on October 24 signed an agreement on the modalities for operationalising Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, paving the way for its inauguration ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikh faith founder Guru Nanak Dev.

About Kartarpur corridor

The 4.2-km long Kartarpur corridor is a border corridor between India and Pakistan that will connect the Sikh shrines of Dera Baba Nanak Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. The inauguration facilitated the Indian pilgrims to visit Gurudwara Kartapur Sahib in Pakistan. Indian pilgrims of all faiths can use the corridor. The travel between both countries via the corridor will be visa-free. However, each visitor would be required to pay a fee of USD 20. India had requested Pakistan not to charge the Indian pilgrims. However, Pakistan refused to waive the fee.
