Team India aces at World Schools Debating Championship, Tejas Subramaniam ranked the best speaker in the world

When it comes to debates, India has marked itself on the global map after a team of Indian youngsters has won the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC).

When it comes to debates, India has marked itself on the global map after a team of Indian youngsters has won the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC). 

The team of five Indian debaters won the championship that was held in Bangkok. The five debaters, namely Tejas Subramaniam, Bhavya Shah, Manya Gupta, Saranya Ravindran and Prithvi Arun bagged the championship with an impressive 9-0 win over the Canadian team. The results were announced after a unanimous decision by the judges declared Team India as world champions. In addition, Chennai-based Tejas Subramaniam has been ranked as the best speaker in the whole world. Among other team members who were listed as the best speakers are Bhavya Shah as the sixth-best speaker in the world and Manya Gupta was ranked the 14th best speaker in the world.

The championship saw the participation of the best debaters from schools around the world. Teams from several countries like Canada, China, Australia and England competed in the debate that was organized by Indian Schools Debating Society (ISDS). The ISDS initiative was backed up by the Ramco Group. The Indian team won after it surged forward in the eight preliminary rounds and went on to defeat Canada. As per reports, the championship is usually dominated by native English-speaking countries like England. However, the tides have changed and India has aced it in the debating championship. 

Taking to Facebook, ISDS wrote:

"Team India did something simply unheard of: went through the World Schools Debating Championships with 12 straight wins in a power paired tournament, dropping only one ballot along the way (47/48 ballots)."

"Commiserations to Team Canada who were incredible finals opponents, and a brilliant team." it added

As per ISDS, a victory of this stature has not been achieved by any country in the past and India is the first one to do so. In addition, Bhavya Shah became the first visually impaired speaker to be listed in the top ten debater's list. The Indian team's win was praised by netizens. Read some of the comments here:
