'The Champion of Chess': PM Modi congratulates India's youngest ever Grandmaster D Gukesh, read here

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated India's youngest ever Grandmaster D Gukesh. In a tweet posted on Friday, PM Modi said that the chess champion Young D Gukesh has made the country proud with his accomplishment, adding that his diligence and perseverance are noteworthy.

Furthermore, PM Modi extended his best wishes to Gukesh for his future endeavours. D Gukesh won the title at the Delhi International chess Grandmaster Open held on Tuesday.

"The champion of chess! Young D Gukesh has made the country proud by his accomplishment. His diligence and perseverance are noteworthy! Congratulations to him and best wishes for his future endeavours," reads PM Modi's tweet praising the young Grandmaster.

12-year-old Tamil Nadu lad Gukesh became India's youngest Grandmaster and second youngest Grand Master in the world on Tuesday. Furthermore, he achieved the title of the youngest Indian to achieve the feat at 12 years, seven months and 17 days, erasing the mark set by his state-mate R Praggnanandhaa in June last year.

He achieved his third and final GM norm at the ongoing 17th Delhi International Open Chess tournament after beating compatriot DK Sharma in the ninth round. Gukesh has become India's 59th Grand Master.

The youngster, who idolises legendary Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer and India's Viswanathan Anand, told PTI after achieving the feat that he was very happy and excited.

"I am very happy and excited to have become a Grand Master. I am delighted to have won the third (GM) norm and the title. I would like to play Anand sir sometime," he said over the phone.

The son of Rajinikanth and Padma, both doctors, the lad started playing the game with his parents at home, and he was later enrolled in an academy in the locality. He was drawn to the game under the guidance of MS Bhaskar and then a few others, including Vishnu Prasanna.

"At the age of seven, I joined a summer camp in my school. MS Bhaskar, my coach, spotted my talent and encouraged me," Gukesh said.

He is presently coached by Grand Master Vishnu Prasad.
