The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on October 2, 2018, conducted fresh raids at the two locations in the downtown area of Srinagar as part of its probe into whether the funding of separatists from Pakistani terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was being used to fuel violence in the valley.

Early morning, a team of NIA officials raided the house of Ajaz Ahmad Hakak in Nowhatta and carried out extensive searches not only at his residence but also at his shop. The searches, which the central agency termed as follow-up action, were carried out in Srinagar, Sources in the NIA believe that the violence in Kashmir is not spontaneous, but it was part of a ‘grand scheme’ hatched in association with militant outfits in Pakistan to destabilize Jammu and Kashmir.

The Hawala traders would pass on currency to Hurriyat leaders and their associates, who would send it to protesters to hold ‘violent agitations.’ Although the Hurriyat leadership has called the NIA crackdown "revengeful and arbitrary." In 2017, National Investigation Agency’s crackdown on the Hurriyat leadership, their relatives and businessmen in connection with hawala money transactions that have put the separatists leadership on the back foot in the valley.

All prominent second-rung leaders of the Hurriyat, barring a minuscule few, have been arrested. Recently, The NIA court extended the judicial remand of Dukhtaran-e-Millat chairperson Syeda Asiya Andrabi, Secretary General Nahida Nasreen and Fahmeeda Sofi by 30 days.

Aasiya and two associates Nahida Nasreen and Sofi Fehmeeda were arrested by NIA in July and currently lodged in Tihar jail. Dukhtaran chief and her associates are accused of delivering hate speeches and endangering the sovereignty and security of the country.

In August 2018, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Syed Shakeel Ahmad, who is the second son of Hizbul Mujahideen chief, Syed Salahuddin. The arrest was made after the NIA raided Shakeel's house in Rambagh area of Srinagar. He was brought to Delhi for further questioning.

He has been booked in case RC-06/2011/NIA/DLI (Funding of Terror in J&K through Hawala Channel), the same case in which his brother Syed Shahid Yusuf was arrested in November last year. Syed Shahid Yusuf, the younger son of the Hizb supremo was arrested by NIA accusing him of having received funds from abroad from the militant group. He was charge-sheeted in 2018.
