As the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University have been vehemently protesting against the Draft Hostel Manual which was approved by the Inter-Hall Administration claiming that the manual has provisions for fee hike, curfew timings and dress code restrictions for students, the JNU administration in a letter has dismissed the claims. The administration in the letter has said that the rates have been revised by the IHA committee after more than three decades. Here are the details about the existing charges and revised charges against which the JNU students clashed with security personnel, paramilitary forces and jumped atop water cannons since Monday morning.

One time-mess security increased but remains refundable

The rent for student single room has been hiked from Rs 10 to Rs 300, rent for student double room hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 600, one-time refundable mess security deposit hiked from Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000. Newspaper charges, Mess bill, Establishment charges have not been revised. The letter says, although the one-time mess security is increased, it is refundable. It also stated the reason for the increase in mess security, which is because of the increasing number of defaulters who do not pay the mess bills. The administration also appealed to the student community not to be misled by a few rumourmongers who are trying to derail the normal functioning of the university.

Clashes between forces and JNUSU students

The students are protesting against what they call the "anti-student" policies of the varsity's administration. While the varsity hosted its third convocation on Monday and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest, massive protest is being staged by students of JNUSU  with banners that reads: "Say No to Fee Hike". The students' union gave a call to students to assemble in the campus, from there they marched to the AICTE auditorium, where the convocation is being held. While the administration has barricaded the area outside the auditorium, clashes are being reported between the forces deployed for security and JNUSU students.

JNU administration appealed to end strike

In an appeal signed by the deans of various schools in JNU said that it is a matter of grave concern that academic life in the university has come under severe threat due to the on-going students' strike. "While the democratic and peaceful mode of protests, dissents and demonstrations are always welcome, the current stir has begun to affect the academic career of thousands of JNU students who come from all sections of the society," the varsity said.
