Thunderstorm, lightning witnessed in parts of Mumbai

Thunderstorm and lightning struck adjoining parts of Mumbai around 8:30 p.m on Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted the weather condition earlier and the Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, KS Hosalikar had also tweeted about it. The agency had earlier predicted heavy rainfalls accompanied by thunderstorm for four hours in districts of Palghar and Thane. Hosalikar tweeted around 5 pm in the evening bout the warning and also stated that along with the adjoining parts, Mumbai sky is likely to be cloudy and witness gusty winds.

Withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon

The IMD stated that the southwest monsoon had already withdrawn from the entire Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Bihar. The weather agency also predicted that the weather conditions are gradually becoming more favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from parts of Central India and in the next 24 hours, it will also withdraw from some more parts of the west and east India. IMD predicted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning with isolated heavy rains over south peninsular India during the next 24 hours.

Mumbai rains 2019

Mumbai has seen unprecedented rains this monsoon season. Reports state that the financial capital has received the highest rainfall in the past 65 years, this year. With 3,452 mm rainfall in the year 1954, this year, Mumbai has received over 3,475 mm from June 1 to September 17. The highest rainfall recorded in a single day was 944mm on July 26, 2005. Usually, the city gets southwest monsoon rains beginning June to September-end with peak rains occurring in July, but this has extended to October this year.
