Two foreign nationals detained for illegal stay in Greater Noida

Two Nigerian Nationals were detained by the police in Greater Noida as they were found staying without valid travel documents officials said on Thursday. 

The two approached the police over a fight

The two approached the Surajpur police station over a fight that broke out between them, the police said. "When they came to the police station with their dispute, their travel documents were checked as part of standard procedures but those were found invalid after which they were detained," Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Vaibhav Krishna, told PTI.

Further investigation underway

The said that both the accused have been taken to police lines and further information on them is awaited. The police also confirmed that investigations on both of them are underway.

Noida police arrest 60 foreign nationals

In July, the Greater Noida police had detained at least 60 foreign nationals on the grounds of insufficient travel documents including passports and visas. Those who were able to produce enough proof of their legal stay were released subsequently, while those who couldn't, were deported to their countries. However, 17 people from them escaped police custody. “Around 8.30 pm on Thursday, 17 foreigners escaped from the reserve police lines in Surajpur where they were lodged. They escaped after breaking open a bathroom window,” Gautam Buddh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said.

Similar incidents

In May, a Nigerian citizen was sentenced to three years in prison by a Delhi Court. Additional Sessions Judge Rajesh Kumar Singh had convicted him under section 14 (staying in India after the expiry of visa) of the Foreigners Act and said that he be deported to his country after completion of his sentence. The accused was arrested in 2016 for allegedly possessing contraband drugs, however, the court then acquitted him for the charges of illegal possession of contraband drugs. In a similar incident, two foreign nationals were arrested in Chennai by Kancheepuram police, allegedly for staying without a valid visa and other travel documents.
