Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to visit National War Memorial ahead of taking charge

Earlier, it was reported that three services -- Army, Air Force and Navy have prepared a presentation for the new Defence Minister about their plans for modernisation.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit National War Memorial on Saturday before taking charge of his ministry.

"Shall visit the National War Memorial tomorrow morning and pay tributes to our brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. Later I shall be formally taking charge as the RM of this country. Look forward to further strengthen National Security and Defence," Mr Singh said in a tweet.

Earlier, it was reported that three services -- Army, Air Force and Navy have prepared a presentation for the new Defence Minister about their plans for modernisation.

Mr Singh will take over from Nirmala Sitharaman who has been allotted the Finance ministry.

On Thursday the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow Parliamentary constituency took oath as the Union Minister in the PM Modi Cabinet 2.0. at the swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 30. 

Union Home Minister and BJP candidate Rajnath Singh won the Lucknow seat with a margin of 3,47,302 votes, he was in the fray with SP's Poonam Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha's wife.

In 2014, Rajnath Singh won the election by a resounding 5,61,106 votes, defeating Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2,72,749 votes. In third place, Nakul Dubey won a total of 64,449 votes. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had been contesting from Lucknow since 1991 till 2004. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Lalji Tandon won the elections with 2,04,028 votes continuing the BJP winning streak.
