Union Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, is barely recognizable as Raja Janak at Luv Kush Ramlila

The festival of Navratri is going on. Along with being dedicated to goddess Durga, it also marks the time when Lord Rama and King Ravana battled each other after the latter abducted Mata Sita. Lord Rama killed Ravana - signifying the victory of good over evil - on the 10th day of Vijaya Dashami.

While Ras garba dominates the west and Durga Puja in the east, Ramlila is organised in the northern part of the country, especially Delhi. People dress up as characters from Ramayana and enact the complete story over a period of ten days. It culminates with the burning of huge models of Ravana, Meghnath (Ravana’s son) and Kumbhakaran (Ravana’s brother) on the day of Dusshera or Vijay Dashami.

In one of the Ramlilas organised in Delhi, Union Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, donned up the character of Raja Janak. He tweeted his pictures before going on stage for his performance. Raja Janak is the king of Janakpur and was Mata Sita’s father.

Dressed up as the king, he sported a big moustache and golden crown with traditional attire and dazzling jewellery. The union minister was barely recognizable in the get-up. Dr Harsh Vardhan delivered his dialogues very well in ‘shudh' Hindi. The audience cheered for his performance and applauded his great acting skills.

LUV KUSH RAMLILA, RED FORT

He performed at the Luv Kush Ramlila at Red Fort, Delhi. It is one of the old Ramlila committees in Delhi and has been organizing Ramlila for decades. This high-profile Ramlila has the country’s top names in the audience including the Prime Minister of India, various Cabinet Ministers, Religious and social leaders, and many celebrities. The Ramlila is open for general public too.

Reportedly, this year's Luv Kush Ramlila will see Vindu Dara Singh portraying the role of Hanuman. He is the son of the late Dara Singh, who is renowned for his role as devout Hanuman in the Ramayana TV series. Delhi’s Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Vijay Sampla, and a lawmaker of Bihar, Sanjay Yadav, will also be seen. In the past, Bhojpuri actor and politician, Manoj Tiwari, had also performed at the Ramlila.
