As Kiren Rijiju took charge as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports, athletes conveyed their best wishes to him. While Olympians, footballers and cricketers congratulated the Minister for his new role, former South Africa cricketer Jonty Rhodes and Rijiju indulged in a heartwarming conversation about the benefits of sports.
Rhodes on Saturday tweeted about the valuable lessons sports offers that help future generations lead healthier lifestyles, while wishing Rijiju the best for his new role, “Sport has so many valuable lessons to teach all of us @KirenRijiju as well as ensuring that future generations are able to lead healthier lifestyles through activity and participation in sports!”
The Minister echoed the South African’s views, “Yes @JontyRhodes8 100% true that sports offers so much in life. And to lead healthier lifestyles through activity and participation in sports! Thanks for your valuable wishes.”
Rhodes is considered arguably the best fielder to have played the game of cricket. Even after retirement, he was associated with Mumbai Indians as the fielding coach till 2017. The ex-cricketer's daughter was also born in the city and he interestingly had named her ‘India’. With his latest tweet, Rhodes has once again shown how he much he is aware of the major happenings in the country.
Rhodes’ tweet was in response to former Olympics silver medallist, Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore’s congratulatory wish for Rijiju and the new Minister's reply to it. Rathore was the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first term in charge.
Under the previous Modi government, Rijiju had held the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs portfolio.
Another cricketer Suresh Raina, footballer Sunil Chhetri, Olympics gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra, gymnast Dipa Karmarkar, table tennis star Manika Batra were the others who wished Minister Rijiju for his role as the Sports Minister.
Rijiju also holds the portfolio of Minister of State for Minority Affairs and also a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament former, beating Nabam Tuki by a margin of 1,67,132 votes in the Arunachal West seat.
