Union Minister KJ Alphons made a controversial comment while reacting to criticisms by certain groups in Kerala over the bestowing of Padma Bhushan to ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. He has said that Malayalees cannot be happy for other Malayalees and only see them in poor light.

"If something good is achieved by a Malayalee then the other Malayalees should be happy about that. We should all celebrate. But here we have a little problem with this if something good happens to a Malayalee instead of being happy they are the ones who criticize them and see them in poor light. This is the mentality of Malayalees. Thus there is a problem in the DNA of Malayalees. Senkumar is not a part of the party, he is not even the office bearer of the party. What kind of authority and freedom does he have to comment something like this? This is not good for public interest. He said what he felt like but he should not have commented this even though he expressed his opinion," he said.

After former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan award on the occasion of 70th Republic Day, ex-Police Chief TP Senkumar for Kerala said undermined the 77-year-old by calling him a below average scientist.

"Narayanan is a below average scientist... ask any ISRO scientist who is still working there about his contributions," the former top cop said.

He had also equated Nambi Narayanan with murder accused people from Kerala.

"If this is the yardstick for a Padma award, then people like Govinda Chami, Ameerul Islam (both accused in the killing of two women) and Mariam Rasheeda (an accused along with Narayanan in the ISRO spy case), would get a Padma award next year. The government should have waited," he said.
