Union Minister Maneka Gandhi Demands Death Penalty For Kathua Rapists

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has demanded death penalty for Kathua rapists. She also said that she and her ministry intend to bring an amendment in the POCSO act. 

"I have been deeply disturbed by the rape case in Kathua and all the recent rape cases that have happened in recent past. I and the ministry intend to bring an amendment in the POCSO act  asking for the death penalty for rape on children below 12 years," said Maneka Gandhi

Earlier in the day, Republic TV sources have learnt that Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti will put pressure on the BJP asking it to sack two ministers who have defended Kathua rape accused. Sources have also said that if her demand is not met, she can also pull out from the PDP-BJP coalition.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir government has appointed two public prosecutors both Sikhs, for the trial of the Kathua rape and murder case to ensure the focused and speedy conduct in the matter.

The government has appointed S Bhopinder Singh, Chief Prosecuting Officer, Crime Branch, Jammu and Harinder Singh, Chief Prosecuting Officer, Samba as Special Public Prosecutors to conduct the case an give a neutral verdict on the matter.

Earlier on Friday,Mehbooba Mufti issued a statement assuring that her government will bring a law to make the death penalty mandatory for those who rape minors.

The Kathua victim's body was recovered from Rassana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses.

On 23 January, the government handed over the case to the crime branch which then formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrested eight people including two Special Police Officers (SPOs) and a head constable.
