After the Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and 8 others were chargesheeted by the Delhi Police in 2016 JNU Sedition case, Union Minister Smriti Irani took on the Congress on and slammed the party for backing the 'Tukde Tukde gang''. She also dared the party to publicly support the group involved in the case.

"I am listing the achievements of the country today as on side the Centre is committed to empowering the youth to ensure a strong India and on the other side, Congress continues to support those who say Bharat Tere Tukde Honge. The Congress leader has a venomous approach towards PM than break the Indian forces. Would they have the guts to stand out in public places and raise those slogans? And will public support them?

The Congress leader hid behind the fig leaf of sedition and did not pay heed to the fact that a criminal conspiracy was ensued against India. Just because Congress leader has a venomous approach towards PM Modi they would side with the Tukde forces than contribute for India. Rahul Gandhi has publicly supported the tukde gang. Congress must say would they have the guts to stand in public spaces and repeat the statements against India. NDA is with India, Congress is with the tukde gang", she said.

The Delhi Police had filed a voluminous 1200-page chargesheet in the 2016 JNU sedition case on January 14 in which Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven others have been named as the main accused.

Ten persons were named as main-accused in the Delhi Police chargesheet, while for 36 others there was insufficient evidence thus far to launch a trial. The chargesheet will be taken up by the Delhi court on January 19.

The Delhi police carried its chargesheet into the Patiala House Court premises in a large metal trunk that had to be hauled by two persons. As per details of the chargesheet accessed by Republic TV, the Delhi Police's investigation concluded that the video footage of the anti-national sloganeering that allegedly went on at the JNU campus in February 2016 at the event to protest against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attacker Afzal Guru was authentic, and using this, as well as the testimonies of 10 eye-witnesses, the charges have been filed and the seven persons who are Kashmir residents from JNU, AMU and Jamia-Milia and have been named as main-accused were identified.
