Uttarakhand: 105-year-old and 103-year-old women cast their votes

The polling for the first phase of the panchayat election was conducted in Uttarakhand on Saturday where 105-year-old and 103-year-old women cast their votes

The polling for the first phase of the panchayat election was conducted in Uttarakhand on Saturday where 105-year-old Tara Devi and 103-year-old Kasturi Devi cast their votes at a polling booth. Both the women cast their votes in Gram Panchayat Ranadi of Dunda block of Uttarkashi. ANI shared a picture of both the women accompanied by a young man. The picture has inspired many on social media.

Uttarakhand gears up for Panchayat Polls

Representatives of various polling parties had visited the polling stations in villages to see the arrangements made for the first phase of panchayat polls, In view of the panchayat elections. The State Election Commission had earlier issued instructions to the concerned District Election Officers, along with the necessary guidelines, to ensure all necessary arrangements are in place for the smooth conduct of the poll process. While notifying the poll schedule, the Uttarakhand State Election Commissioner Chandrashekhar Bhatt said that the Panchayat elections will be conducted in 12 districts of the State, except Haridwar, from October 5 to October 16. 

Security in Uttarakhand tightened

Security has been tightened regarding the panchayat elections in Uttarakhand. The Indo-Nepal border has been sealed in view of the panchayat elections. The international bridge at Jhulaghat under the Munakot development block has also been closed in the wake of the elections.

Results on October 21

The State Election Commission of Uttarakhand had on September 13 announced the dates for holding the panchayat election in the state. The elections will be held in three phases from October 5 to October 16. The results will be declared on October 21. In Uttarakhand, 7,485-gram panchayats are going to polls this month.
