Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher in a tell-all interview to Republic TV's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami on the show 'Nation Wants To Know' spoke about various aspects of his upcoming film 'The Accidental Prime Minister'. Talking about the portrayal of his character as former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the film, he responded to the question "Why was Dr Singh called the Accidental PM". Anupam Kher said:
"He was called the accidental PM because he thought that he would be the last to be the Prime Minister. Pranab da(Pranab Mukherjee) was the person whom he thought would be the next Prime Minister from within the Congress. They wanted somebody whom they thought they could trust and then he became powerful. It's a very interesting story of becket in a different manner. However, he later started enjoying being in power and he also went on to threaten the whole party."
Earlier, speaking about his portrayal of Manmohan Singh in the movie he said that even his mother failed to spot the difference.
"My mother when she saw the poster of 'The Accidental Prime Minister' and she said to me oh this is Manmohan Singh and I said no mom this is me. She said don't lie. I said no it's me".
'The Accidental Prime Minister' traces the making and the unmaking of the former PM Dr Manmohan Singh. It is based on a book of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, a former media advisor to Dr Manmohan Singh. Besides Anupam Kher, the film also stars Suzanne Bernert as UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, Ahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi and Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi.
The movie is helmed by debutant director Vijay Ratnakar Gutte and is scheduled to release in March 2019.
