BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceeding against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for attributing his remarks on the recent Rafale verdict to the apex court. A bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi said it will hear the plea on April 15.

Speaking to Republic TV, BJP MP from New Delhi constituency Meenakshi Lekhi took down Rahul Gandhi over the contempt of the top court in his media addressing, for attributing to the Supreme Court what it had never said in its order on the Rafale deal order of April 10.

"All the statements that are coming in the public through media recording and publications, we have annexed all of that. Repeatedly an attempt has been made by Rahul Gandhi to replace to own words as court's verdict. It this is not contempt, that too a criminal contempt of court, then what else will be. That is misquoting, misrepresenting the facts in public and making allegations and accusations about the Supreme Court order and it is for this reason the contempt has been filed today, which has been listed for Monday. I am grateful that the court has taken it up," Meenakshi Lekhi said.

Later, hitting out at Rahul Gandhi over corruption, the BJP MP questioning on how someone who claims to be the Prime Minister of India can misquote the top court.

"In the Gandhi-Nehru family, three out of four adults are on bail. They are going to talk about corruption. People completely soaked in corruption can say something like that. how can anyone who claims to be the Prime Minister of this country have no sense in misquoting the  Supreme Court's order?" she added.

Meenakshi Lekhi in her plea has said that the Congress president has attributed his personal remarks to the top court and tried to create prejudice.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Lekhi, told the bench that Congress president made a remark that the "Supreme Court has said, chowkidaar chor hai" in the verdict.

Buoyed by the Supreme Court order allowing petitioners seeking a review of the Rafale judgment to rely on leaked documents, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media on April 10 and said that even the apex court has made it "clear" that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "committed a theft" (chowkidaar chor hai).

Earlier, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also lashed out at Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in the SC verdict in the Rafale case, saying that "The Congress president probably doesn't read even half a paragraph of the court's order, but, by saying that the court has said 'chowkidaar chor hai', it is verging on contempt of court."
