The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, on Wednesday made a shocking comment on the appointment of Ram Nath Kovind as the President of India. Dragging in the President during his address to the media, the Congress leader said that 'Ram Nath Kovind was made the President to fit in caste factor and LK Advani was left behind'. Immediately after the news break, BJP conducted a press briefing stating that the comment of Rajasthan's Chief Minister "is an attack on the constitution on India".
Addressing the media on Wednesday, BJP spokesperson G. V. L. Narasimha Rao said that 'Congress wants to see President Kovind only through the social prism'.
"We have just heard a statement from the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr Ashok Gehlot, who is known to be the senior leader of the Congress party and in a very very unfortunate comment he has criticized the Rashtrapati. He has said that the President got his position only because of his social identity, being a member from the Dalit caste, he is been appointment to the highest office. I think this is a very very low attack by the Congress party against the highest constitutional functionary in this country. I think none of us exist without the constitution. So, this is very very anti-Dalit, anti- people, anti-constitution statement made by Mr Ashok Gehlot. It only shows the real mindset of the Congress party. They are unable to take the fact that someone from the stature of Shri Kovind, who comes from a Dalit background, is also a highly accomplished individual. But the Congress party wants to see him only through the social prism and wants to make statement that only lead to condemnation"
Furthermore, he condemned the statement and not only demanded an apology but also urged the Congress party to take strong actions against its leader.
"I think this is a very very unacceptable and completely condemnable coming from another constitutional functionary Ashok Gehlot. This is an attack on the society and an attack on Dalit community and attack on national pride and national self respect. We not only demand an apology but very very strong action against the Chief Minister of Rajasthan by the Congress party. We know B. R. Ambedkar was hounded by the Congress when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister and how they not only insulted him but they forced him to leave the government. And this country also knows that how B. R. Ambedkar was defeated with whinges by the Congress party when he was alive and he contested polls. The same mindset, anti-Dalit mindset of the Congress party, continues till date and people of this country will teach a befitting lesson to this party".
BJP also urged Election Commission of India to take Suo Motu cognizance of the statement made by Ashok Gehlot.
"We expect the Election Commission of India to take Suo Motu cognizance of the statement made by Ashok Gehlot. I think the EC should take a note because Election Commission itself is a constitutional body and the president is the custodian. These statements can be heard on Television and I think the EC should take a note because Election Commission itself is a constitutional body and the president is the custodian. The Election Commission of India will really be called into question if they do not protect even the highest constitutional functionary in this country under whose judiciary all the edifice operate. We do not think it is necessary for one political party to register a complaint because this is an attack on the constitution on India. This is an attack on the custodian of India. So, we certainly appeal to the election commission of India to give a notice to Mr Ashok Gehlot, force him to apologise and give a directive that no political party should make any comment critical of the President of India because that is bringing disrupt to our democracy and Congress party is guilty of doing this".
