Clashes between the police and the BJP workers in Hooghly's Dhanekhali have escalated on Thursday leading to ten police personnel getting injured.
As seen in the video, security forces are trying to bring the situation under control. But the clashes continued between the BJP workers and the cops leading to the casualties.
The BJP workers had gheraoed the police station and pelted bricks at the security forces.
As seen in the video, the BJP workers vandalised the police station, breaking the window pane, bringing down the barricade, destroying the banner and other parts of the office. One can also see the bricks and stones used by the BJP workers in the clash. The miscreants also attacked the police vehicles.
On Wednesday night, in Hooghly's Dhanekhali area, clashes had erupted between TMC and BJP. This lead to the police intervening and conducting lathicharge. One BJP worker was injured by a bullet.
On Thursday, BJP workers alleged that they were lathi-charged and fired by the West Bengal police for chanting 'Jai Shri Ram'
This led to the BJP protesting in front of the local police station in Dhanekhali. They then gheraoed the police station and attacking the police. The BJP had staged a protest against the Mamata Banerjee-led government by chanting slogans like 'Vande Mataram' and 'Jai Shri Ram'. They burnt tires in the streets, engulfing the area in smoke.
The police have in turn said that the BJP workers were heckling them and tried to snatch their weapon during which the bullet injury took place.
There have been reports of violence in the state before and during the Lok Sabha elections.
Amidst the violence, a controversy had erupted on the use of the chant 'Jai Shri Ram' by the BJP workers. They have been accusing the state machinery of targeting them for using the chant.
Recently, in Lok Sabha, BJP leader from Bengal Dilip Ghosh said that the party workers were using the chant not a religious slogan but to counter those who do politics.
