On Tuesday, the unsung heroes of our country, who have made India proud in their respective fields, were honoured by Republic TV in the special broadcast of 'Proud to be Indian' as the nation celebrated its 70th Republic Day. One of the esteemed guests joining us was Meghna Girish, the mother of Major Akshay Girish Kumar who was martyred during the Nagrota terrorist attack that took place back in 2016.

Her brave son, Major Akshay Girish Kumar, 'took multiple bullets and a grenade and fought to his last breath to save children, women and unarmed men' from terrorists.

Speaking to Republic TV, Meghna Girish, mother of Major Akshay Girish opened up about dealing with a loss of such a loved one and said, 'It is very strange as one can never be prepared for the loss of this magnitude. But we received immense support as people were writing to us, and sending us messages from all over the world, and I started writing and responding to people because I just had to thank them for their immense support'

She further added that she had to just share the pride that people had in Akshay. 'I think the strength stems from Akshay himself because even as a kid, he was so courageous and compassionate, he had this sheer commitment to serve his country from three years of age and he never looked back'.

Speaking about the 2016 Nagrota attacks, she said 'Akshay became a national hero and led the quick reaction team which was responsible for negating the terrorist attack aimed at taking people hostage and he went ahead and did his duty, thus saving the women and the children and no one was harmed'.

Mrs. Girish also said that for Major Akshay Kumar, it was always 'Civilians first, his unit second, and himself last'. She also narrates another incident, when the Major had shown extreme courage during a 2010 road accident, where he had saved 11 people and was able to send them safely to the local civil hospital.
