Congress has reacted to Shiv Sena's demand to the BJP-led government to ban Burqa akin to the move made by Sri Lanka following the serial blasts which killed over 250 people.
On April 28, Sri Lanka called to ban all facial coverings, citing the Burqas to be a 'security risk and a flag of fundamentalism'. The Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece Saamna demanded that its ally BJP-led government to follow the footsteps of Sri Lanka and ban the Burqa in India.
The Congress reacting to this has accused the NDA of doing appeasement politics. Here's is Rajasthan CM and party's senior leader talking about Shiv Sena's demand.
"What Shiv Sena and BJP want to do is the politics of appeasement. We want to do the politics of love, brotherhood and love for country. Rahul Gandhi has been saying this - If we want to keep the country united and strong then follow the path of Congress, not BJP," he said.
In the party's editorial, Shiv Sena has asked PM Modi that if Sri Lanka, which is the country of Raavan, can ban Burqa, then why can't India, which is the country of Lord Ram, implement the same in the country.
"Sri Lankan President Maithripala has taken a courageous decision by banning Burqa or mask which covers face for security reasons," quotes Saamana, Shiv Sena mouthpiece.
Adding that many countries have banned Burqa or facial coverings, the BJP ally has raised the demand to do the same in India in the national interest of the country. "We are asking this question because PM Modi is going to Ayodhya today. We are raising this demand in the national interest," the editorial further reads.
The BJP responded to its ally Shiv Sena's demand for a pan-India ban on Burqas on the grounds of national security. Rajya Sabha MP and BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao has expressed his party's opposition to such action.
