Congress workers have begun violent protests in Kolkata against the release of the film "The Accidental Prime Minister". The protestors are burning effigies of PM Narendra Modi and sloganeering against the Prime Minister and the BJP. 

The film which is based on the book with the same name by Sanjay Baru is on Dr Manmohan Singh's term as Prime Minister between 2002 to 2012. 

The protests on Friday is taking place outside Chandni Chowk's Hind cinema in Kolkata.

The protestors have alleged that the film has no context and is maligning for former PM Manmohan Singh and hence want to stop the film from releasing. They have claimed that the film is BJP propaganda and not realistic.

Security has been increased outside the theatre. 

The BJP twitter handle had shown the trailer of the film saying, "Riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 long years. Was Dr Singh just a regent who was holding on to the PM’s chair till the time heir was ready? Watch the official trailer of #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister, based on an insider’s account, releasing on 11 Jan!

Congress leaders had wasted no time to react to the tweet.

Congress MP PL Punia said, "This (the film) is a BJP game. They know their 5 years are about to get over and they have to give the reports to the public. But when the Prime Minister has nothing to show to the public they are trying to use these tactics to divert the attention of the people. The government has been a failure and the people have already decided their mandate for 2019," said PL Punia in the matter.

Not only PL Punia, but several other Congress leaders also waded into the controversy over the film targeting BJP for spreading propaganda against the former through the film.
