The Congress party on Wednesday announced that appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the AICC General Secretary to Uttar Pradesh East, approved by his brother and party president Rahul Gandhi weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
Speaking to Republic TV over the crucial political development, National Conference chief and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah expressed his happiness over Priyanka Gandhi's entry into active politics and regarded as a "good lady" who will give momentum to active politics.
"I am very happy that Priyanka Gandhi has come into active politics that will also help. She is a good lady. I am sure she will give impetus to better politics, Farooq Abdullah said congratulating Priyanka Gandhi.
As per the statement by the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi appointed KC Venugopal as AICC General Secretary in Karnataka and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the AICC General Secretary from UP (East) with immediate effect. Also Jyotiraditya Scindia and Ghulam Nabi Azad has been appointed as the General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West and Haryana respectively. The appointment letter has been officially signed by Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot.
Congress also took to Twitter to congratulate party leaders K C Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia on their new appointments:
Priyanka Vadra's husband Robert Vadra also took to social media to congratulate his wife on her induction into the Congress party as General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. Taking to his personal Facebook page, Congress president Rahul Gandhi's brother-in-law wrote:
"Congratulations P... always by your side in every phase of your life. Give it your best."
This decision has come at a time when the recently formed alliance between Akhilesh Yadav's SP- Mayawati's BSP snubbed the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh and decided to contest 50:50 seats in the state, leaving the Congress' bastions Amethi and Rae Bareli for the party.
