Union Minister Smriti Irani launched a scathing attack on Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor during The Debate with Republic TV's Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami over his recent tweet insulting the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj.
Speaking in the during The Debate, the Union Minister lashed out at the Congress party over Shashi Tharoor's comments saying that the leader of the Rahul Gandhi-led party has hurt the sentiments of crores of people who visit the Kumbh as part of their beliefs.
"I think the ethos of Hinduism is not well understood by the Congress party. The true nature of the Congress party towards Hinduism is reflected in the tweet of Mr Tharoor. Is it lost in the Congress party and those who call themselves the senior in the Congress leadership that this is an attack on the sentiments, faith and the belief of not only the sentiments of people of this country but of the world - on the simple Hindus who goes to the Kumbh with the belief - Hum kehte hai Kumbh tapasya ka prateek hai.. Kumbh moksh ki our main sanket deta hai(We say Kumbh is the symbol of people's beliefs and Kumbh gives the signs of salvation to the people) - It is not one person, two person, it is crores of people who converge in the Sangam with the desire to connect with the divine and that is what Shashi Tharoor insulted," she said.
Smriti Irani went onto attack Rahul Gandhi who has been keeping silent amid the controversy over Shashi Tharoor's comments. She stated that while the Congress president has the time to tweet about his meeting with Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, he has not yet reacted to his own MP's comments insulting the Prayagraj Kumbh.
"And what is taggering that Gandhi(Rahul Gandhi) has the time to tweet about every lie that he can possibly conjure up. He has the time to attack a man who might be ailing but is still ably leading the state of Goa. But he finds he finds no words of condemnation against Shashi Tharoor for this which is a religious attack on the sentiments of Hindus. Be charitable you say..Hindus were charitable, you raised a temple to the ground. We were plundered for years. Today, a representative of the Congress party is bold enough to mock Hindu belief. We have been charitable enough. Will Mrs Gandhi accept a reliogious slur against any religious belief. Why is it that Congress leadership find Hinduism act for attack?," the Union Minister added.
On Wednesday, Shashi Tharoor attempted to make a remark contrasting the clean 'Ganga campaign' with the holy river being a place for cleansing 'sins', and added an immature comment about people being unclothed.
"Ganga bhi swachh rakhni hain, aur paap bhi yahi dhone hain. Iss Sangam mein sab nange hain. Jai Ganga Maiya ki!" he said in a tweet. (Ganga has to be kept clean, and sins also have to be washed there. In this sangam (meeting point of rivers) everyone is naked. Hail Goddess Ganga!)
