In an unprecedented development, Congress leader Hardik Patel's convoy was stopped for flouting traffic rules in Surat, Gujarat, following which he and his aide were detained by the police. As per inputs, both of them were made to sit in the police jeeps and were taken to an undisclosed location in Surat. 

The members from his (PAAS Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti) organisation have claimed that the two were detained because Hardik Patel had threatened to sit on hunger strike for the Surat fire victims, if the state government did not act against Mayor and the Fire Department officials within 12 hours of the incident. 

As per inputs, the police detained the Congress leader over his protest against Surat Mayor in the aftermath of the fire incident. 

The visuals show Hardik Patel's SUV car was stopped by the police on the highway and then they asked various questions to him. Hardik Patel can be seen sitting on the front seat of the car, talking on his phone in the video.

As per news agency ANI, Hardik Patel had threatened to go on a hunger strike to seek justice for the victims of the Surat fire accident that took place in a coaching class on May 24.

"I have said that if action is not taken against Mayor and officials of the Fire Department, then I will sit on hunger strike," he said while talking to reporters after visiting the Takshashila Arcade in Surat where a fire incident on Friday claimed the lives of 20 students,

Hardik also accused the state government of being in collusion with the accused and trying to "wrap up the issue under the carpet."

Meanwhile, as the investigation is going on two persons who were on the run were arrested by the police in connection with the devastating fire on Sunday. Over 20 students lost their lives in the fire. Two officers of Fire Department were also suspended on Saturday in connection with the fire. 

They were identified as Harshul Vekharia and Jignesh Paghdal, and their arrests come a day after coaching class owner Bhargav Butani was arrested, an official said.
