An Indian cyber expert, seeking political asylum in the US, Monday claimed that the 2014 general election was "rigged" through the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which, he says, can be hacked.

Addressing a press conference in London via Skype, the man, identified as Syed Shuja, said he fled India in 2014 because he felt threatened in the country after the killing of some of his team members.

Shuja claimed the telecom giant Reliance Jio helped the BJP to get low-frequency signals to hack the EVMs. However, he provided no proof to back up his claim. Jio, however, was not in existence in 2014 and was only launched on September 5, 2016.

He said the BJP would have won Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh elections if his team hadn't intercepted the BJP attempts to hack the transmissions in these states.

The outlandish and explosive claims, made in a cloak and dagger manner, could not be immediately confirmed. He claimed he was part of a team at the public sector Electronic Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL), which designed and developed the EVMs. He was presented at a press conference organised by the  Indian Journalists' Association (Europe).

Although he appeared on screen through Skype, his face was masked.

Here's what Republic's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami had to say on the matter:

The time has come for the whole country to come together against a bunch of liars. Without the slightest iota of proof the Congress party has gone to London and on foreign soil the Congress party has said that the Indian democracy is a sham. Led by its top leader Kapil Sibal, the Congress party on foreign soil has said 'far from being the world's largest democracy, India is not a democracy at all'. According to Congress India is a banana republic where elections are rigged and Prime Ministers are chosen against the popular mandate. Remember, there was not one iota of proof in that, we were abused, people of India were abused from London, but there was not one bit of evidence that Congress had. Just because Congress party believes, a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth, like in the now exposed fake news story Rafale, about how Judge Loya died. Rahul Gandhi believes now, he is so emboldened to believe that abusing and discrediting the biggest democratic process in the world in which he had made not one contribution. Levelling wild and cruel allegations against your own country. In the past, abusing the Indian culture on a public platform in Germany and now abusing Indian democracy in London is something Rahul Gandhi thinks he's going to get away with. But I ask him tonight, how many more lies? And I ask you tonight, how many more lies will we let them? They lied about Rafale, Cambridge Analytics, farm loan waivers, they lied on Judge Loya and they shamelessly continue to lie. They lied on the ST/SC Act. Each one of these lies exposed, but they never apologise, they are shameless. Now we have listened to it for so long but now the time has passed, now they will confront them because our national interest will not be taken over by a bunch of liars.
