Popular hair stylist Jawed Habib is the latest celebrity to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Habib signed on the dotted line at an event in Delhi on Monday along with BJP leaders Sanjay Mayukh, Tarun Chugh and Balasubrahmanyam. He expressed pride in belonging to a family of barbers just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted skill-based India by proudly saying he was a Chaiwala (tea-seller). He also stated that till now he was a ‘balon ka chowkidaar’ (guard of the hair) and now he is also a chowkidar of the country.
After joining the party, Habib said, “Till now, I was the chowkidar of the country’s hair, today I am going to become the country’s chowkidar, that’s the truth. I’ve been working for a long time, the change that we have seen in the last years in terms of skill, it’s possible I can contribute in a however small way I can.
"And considering the background that I belong, people say it’s the job of the barber, people look at with so much shame. I think we all need to work towards it and make this country skill-based so that I can say ‘I am the citizen of the country’ and what is my identity? It’s in my hands.
"I witnessed so many changes in the country in the past five years. I would like to talk about my profession because for 35 years my family has been in this profession, people have called me ‘barber’. If Sir Modi can call himself a chaiwala (tea-seller) why should I be ashamed to say I belong to a family of barbers? So much pride and passion have been put that we all should come forward.
"The religion is not first, we are first Indians, the country is first. I have always said I am a ‘Desi’ person and whatever I have is for the country. I used to feel ashamed when people would me a barber, but I thought the only way to change the country is education. And education is not BA degree or PhD, education is the power of my hands.
"And with these hands, if we work with Sir Modi, we can change the whole country. I just need his support and the support of the people of the country. I just want India to become big and all across the world, people should say ‘India is also a great country’."
According to reports, Habib owns over 500 salons across India and some abroad too. His 'salon empire' was estimated at 30 million USD in 2016, as per Forbes.
Habib joins Sadhvi Pragya, Gautam Gambhir, Jaya Praya, among others to join BJP in the past few weeks.
