Veteran actor Anupam Kher in a tell-all interview to Republic TV's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami on the show 'Nation Wants To Know' said that Manmohan Singh will hug me when he will se the film. Talking about his role as look as former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the actor said that:
"I would like to tell you how I prepared for the role of Dr. Manmohan Singh. Dr. Manmohan Singh is a known figure and I am creating history. This film is creating history. After 50 years they will say that 'The Accidental Prime Minister' started a new path for films. Congress is not my rival. Earlier, there was only one party in India and that was the Congress. There are some great people in that party and no one is anyone's rival. Manmohan Singh will come and hug me and will applaud my performance. I want to talk straight to the audience and say this that Manmohan Singh would want to have a cup of tea with me after watching my performance".
Speaking about his portrayal of Manmohan Singh in the movie he said that even his mother failed to spot the difference.
"My mother when she saw the poster of 'The Accidental Prime Minister' and she said to me oh this is Manmohan Singh and I said no mom this is me. She said don't lie. I said no it's me".
Anupam Kher, among other things, put forth that those criticising his film and making allegations against should instead be hailing his performance as he has put in a lot of effort for his role.
"In any other country, people have got Oscars. Such a great portrayal, Daniel Day for Lincoln, Ben Kingsley for Gandhi, Meryl Streep for Margaret Thatcher and the list is endless. Over here you and I are discussing the controversy. The country should applaud that there is somebody who has done the role and put in so much of hard work".
Earlier in the day, addressing the controversy that has broken out following after the trailer release his next venture 'The Accidental Prime Minister', Mr. Kher had said that the film should be India's entry to the Oscars and that it had been the most difficult role he had done in his long career.
"The film was announced two years back and every newspaper knew. My look came into newspapers and now the film is censored. We waited for the film to get censored, whether it was the trailer or whether it is the film then only we announced the release of the film. We have in fact only 15 days left for the film to come out. Energy, money and lot of research have gone into this. Professional people have worked on it. I should be talking about that that this film, according to me, is India's entry for Oscars and I should be nominated for it. Everybody who is talking about this is saying wow this is exactly like Manmohan Singh. Nobody is talking about that. So, I will say that these people who are protesting should suggest my name for the Oscars for being so close to Dr. Manmohan Singh."
Meanwhile, the makers also announced that the release date and contrary to expectations, the film is now hitting the screens sooner than you think. The Accidental Prime Minister is now slated to release on January 11, 2019.
The movie is based on the book which was penned by political commentator Sanjaya Baru, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the UPA administration. The film has been directed by Vijay Gutte with Hansal Mehta as the creative producer. It features Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh, German actor Suzanne Bernert as former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi, Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi and Akshaye Khanna in the role of Sanjaya Baru.
