Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti reiterated her stance on Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Afzal Guru hanging on Wednesday. Speaking in front of a gathering, Mehbooba Mufti targeted the government and former President Pranab Mukherjee over hanging of Afzal Guru, who was found guilty of conspiring and sheltering the militants who attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001 in which nine persons were killed.

"Even before Afzal Guru was going to be hanged, Mufti Mohammad ji (Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and Mehbooba Mufti's father) and I had appealed to President (then President Pranab Mukherjee) to spare him and stop his hanging. He is a young man. His case is pending in the Supreme Court, we had appealed that he should be spared. Even then Afzal Guru was hanged, he was not allowed to meet his family before that, his last remains were not handed over to his family, after which Mufti Sahab wrote another letter for his remains that his body should be brought back. Our stance in the matter never changed," she said speaking in the matter.

Earlier on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Rajya Sabha MP Fayaz Ahmad Mir wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat who are buried in Tihar jail.

"In the remote village of Seerjageer, Sopore lies a tombstone of Mohammed Afzal Guru, without his mortal remains, standing there awaiting the magnanimity of this country, that may one day find it right to return Afzal Guru’s body to his family which lies buried in a corner in Tihar jail", the letter read which was dated February, 11, 2019.

Citing a letter that was written by Mufti Mohammed Saeed to the then PM Dr Manmohan Singh, he said that 'my party and I, wholeheartedly resonate with that sentiment capital punishment, by all means, is an unconstitutional measure and has been called out for its huddled and secretive manner by almost all ideological groups in the country'.

The top secret plan in which Afzal Guru was hanged in the high-security Tihar Jail was codenamed 'Operation Three Star'. Following the rejection of a mercy petition by the President of India, he was executed on 9 February 2013.
