On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his speech in the Lok Sabha he proclaimed that farmer empowerment is the government's priority while attacking Congress for their farmer schemes.

He said, "Even we could take the route of 'loan waivers', but a permanent solution for the empowerment of farmers around 99 agricultural schemes which were stuck are being completed by the NDA government now. Nehruji had laid the foundation stone and I am inaugurating them now by spending thousands of rupees."

He listed the benefits provided by the NDA government:

  • Developed new cold storages.
  • As a reward, encouraged farmers to sell their products online so they get the full amount.
  • This Union Budget, we decided to provide Rs. 6000 per year, that will benefit 12 crore farmers, that is 85% of them.

He attacked the 'loan waiver' scheme of the UPA government at the same time elaborated on the PM Kisan scheme, saying, "Opposition is saying they will not take Rs. 6,000/annum, but who is giving you? Why don't you go and ask the farmer first if he wants it or not? Nobody is giving you, it will be a direct transfer to farmers' bank accounts. But in politics, people go crazy and make big announcements but don't give the benefits of it. "

Elaborating on the Karnataka government's loan waiving scheme, PM Modi attacked the former Prime Minister Deve Gowda's government and Congress government of not delivering promises to farmers.

He said, "You say that Modi took votes by making announcements, but your government announced loan waivers, out of the 43 lakhs only 60 thousand people have benefitted. Go to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, you just big talk," comparing to the NDA Kisan Nidhi Scheme that will apply every year, unlike the UPA government who waive loans 'once in 10 years'

"For 10 years, keeping elections in mind, you created this cycle of farm loan-waivers. You did it in 2009 to win elections... How much hooplah did you create? And of Rs 6 lakh crore, how much did you waive? Rs 52,000 crore?," he added.

The Lok Sabha on Thursday took up the motion of thanks on President Ram Nath Kovind's address to the joint session of Parliament on the first day of the Budget Session which took place on January 31.

Presenting a virtual report card of the Modi government's tenure, President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday highlighted its various development works and commitment to social justice in his Parliamentary address, as he asserted the Modi government has worked to build a "New India" after assuming power in 2014 when the nation was passing through "uncertain times".
