With less than two weeks remaining for the all-important seven-phase 2019 Lok Sabha polls to begin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gave his first election interview, speaking on a wide range of topics with Republic Media Network Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
Reacting on the same and on being asked why the Opposition still feels that Modi doesn't give answers, writer and columnist Madhu Kishwar said: "They don't want answers. They just want him to somehow vanish out of sight but he refuses to do so because of people of India are not ready for that eventuality. The opposition is upset over the fact they have over the last 5 years made it into Modi vs everything. They focused it on him so much that indeed today it is presidential elections and Modi will do well not because his performance in every field is stellar but because No. 1, when people ask themselves Modi Vs Who? The faces that come up are so frightening. The prospect of them coming to power is frightening. No. 2, Pakistan factor. Pakistan is openly saying that we want Rahul Gandhi to come to power."
Coming back to the interview, Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched upon topics ranging from what he believes is necessary for a healthy democracy, such as his reasons for why the people of India will choose a government with absolute majority, to matters of national security such as the Pulwama terror attack, the subsequent IAF airstrikes on Pakistan's Balakot terror base and India's recent A-SAT success; to detailing his government's actions on corruption and fugitive absconders.
