For over 150 years, an army of Dabbawalas has left no stone unturned in fulfilling the hunger of almost 200,000 Mumbaikars. They battle with time and an array of weather conditions with a view to delivering home cooked meal from the home of a person and ensure that it is delivered to the right person, in the right office and on the time promised.
Merely a few weeks ago, Mumbai city’s famous dabbawala’s, participated in Mumbai Marathon and raised awareness about ‘Roti Bank’, an initiative they founded in 2016. Under the initiative, the Dabbawalas have collaborated with a sea of restaurants and caterers from across the city, from whom they collect leftover food and then deliver it to the poor.
Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of the association said,
“We made an appeal to people and said that if you have access food contact us and the Dabbawala will come collect the food in his cycle. The food will then be distributed to the poor. “
