Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the youth and young professionals at the New India Youth Conclave in Surat on Wednesday, praised the Indian Armed forces for their efforts during the Surgical Strike against the terrorists that were carried in September 2016.
While replying to the question of one of the participants at the event, PM Modi talked about the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack during which the then UPA government did not put much effort in retaliating to the killings of several innocent.
"26/11 happened remember... terrorists attacked Mumbai...What happened - we showered flowers and paid tribute. But then during our government, Uri happened. What happened after Uri, things changed. So many innocent people were killed(during Mumbai Terror attack) but the government kept sleeping," said PM Modi as the crowd cheered his spirit.
Later speaking about the surgical strike that were carried on terrorists in Pakistan after four heavily armed terrorists attacked the Indian armed forces on September 18 2016, near the town of Uri in Jammu and Kashmir, he said:
"However, Uri did not let us sleep. The fire that was inside the hearts of the soldiers, the same fire was inside this PM. As a result of which surgical strike happened," he added.
In September 2016, terrorists of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed entered the Army camp in Uri near the Line of Control and killed 20 soldiers in the attack.
In retaliation, the Indian Army troops including the commandos from various units of the Para (Special Forces) units deployed in Jammu and Kashmir carried out Surgical strike across the border on multiple targets. All these targets were launch pads for terrorists for infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out attacks against military and civilian targets.
Though the security forces are not sure about the exact number of casualties on the Pakistan side but based on post-operation intercepts and movements, it is believed that it had uffered around 50 casualties including its regular Army soldiers who were deployed for protecting the terror camps. From the Indian side, only one soldier had suffered injury due to a personnel mine explosion while returning from the operation.
