On Thursday, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani turned 91 years old. The senior political statesman, who held a number of posts and positions in the Union ministry and amongst his party ranks ever since stepping into politics, is credited by many as one of the major reason behind the rise of BJP.

The whole political fraternity, be it members of his own party or from the opposition, paid tributes to the former President of the BJP on this occasion. Leading the way was PM Narendra Modi, who not only showered praises on Advani through Twitter, but also paid him a visit at his residence.

PM Modi termed LK Advani's contribution to the development of India as 'monumental', and credited him for building BJP.

LK Advani began his political career as early as in 1951, when he became a member of Jana Sangh. He slowly grew within the party ranks, and became an important part of the Jana Sangh.

In 1977, when the Janata Dal party, comprising of various different political parties, came to power, Advani was appointed as the Information and Broadcast minister in the Morarji Desai government.

But three years later, the Jana Sangh left the Janata Dal government and decided to form a political party of their own under a new name, which is now known to be as BJP.  Advani was one of the co-founding members of the party.

Under his leadership, the BJP moved forward, and within just 9 years of its formation, was part of the government after extending its support to VP Singh's National Front. In 1996, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the first time came to power, and Advani became the Home Minister. Though, the government only lasted 13 days.
