In a massive jolt to Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Congress President asking him to respond to the criminal contempt petition filed by BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi alleging that Mr Gandhi had committed contempt by attributing his ‘chowkidar chor hai’ remarks on the Rafale controversy to the top court.

Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the media, had said that Supreme Court has accepted that 'Chokidar Chor Hai'. In the 4 minutes 20 seconds clip, Mr Gandhi said:

"Sabse pehle, abhi maine apna nomination file kiya hai. issey pehle maine Wayanad mai nomination file kiya. Toh sabse pehle mai Amethi ke janta and Wayanad ke janta ko dhanyavaad dena chahta hoon ki itna pyaar unhone mujhe diya. Ab chalte hai Rafale mamle pe. Ab kuch din pehle Pradhan Mantri Ji ka ek interview aaya tha jisme unhone kaha ke Supreme Court ne mujhe clean chit de hai.  Aaj Supreme Court ne clear kar diya hai ke Chowkidar ji ne chori karvaye hai. Supreme Court ne accept kiya hai ke Rafale mamle mai koi na koi corruption, koi na koi bhrashtachar hua hai. Aur jaise ke mai pehle se keh raha hoon, aagar Rafale mamle mai investigation hua toh do naam hai: Narendra Modi Ji and Anil Ambani. Mujhe bohot khushi ho rahe hai ke jo mai mahino se keh raha hoon ke jo Hindustan ke Pradhan Matri ji ne Air Force ka paisa chori karke Anil Ambani ji ko diya hai, 30,000 crore diya hai. Iss baat ko Supreme Court ne maan liya hai aur vo ab investigation karne ja rahe hai. Mai rooz unko debate ke liye challenge kar raha hoon. Narendra Modi ji Supreme Court ne aapke baare mai kaha hai ke aapne bhrashtachar kiya hai aur aapne Anil Ambani Ji ko paisa diya hai. Aiye milkar hum bhrashtachar pe discuss karte hai. Desh Rafale ke bare mai janna chahta hai, bhrashtachar ke bare mai janna chahata hai, note bandi ke bare mai jannana chahta hai aur Amit Shah ke putr ke bara mai janta hai. Mai keh raha hoon ke Rafale mamle mai khulam khula bhrashtachar hua hai aur Modi ji ne Anil Ambani ko 30, 000 crore rupay diye hai. Chowkidar mujhse debtae karna nahi chata hai. Vo janta hai ke jis din vo mere saath debate karenge vo desh se aankh nahi mila sakenge. Supreme Court ne nyay ke bare mai baat ke hai. Supreme Court said Chowkidar ne chori ke hai."

(First and foremost, I have filed my nomination. Before this, I had filed my nomination in Wayanad, So, I would like to extend my gratitude to the people of Wayanad and Amethi for showing so love. Now, let's talk about Rafale row. A couple of days ago, an interview of Prime Minister was played on TV where he told the journalist that Court has given him a clean chit. Today, the Supreme Court had made it clearer that the Chowkidar has is involved in the theft. Supreme Court has accepted that there is corruption involved in the entire Rafale issue. And like I have been saying for ages now, if an investigation is undertaken on this matter, two names will surface: Narendra Modi and Anil Ambani. I have been saying for the past few months that the Prime Minister of India stole Air Force's money and gave it to Anil Ambani, amount of 30,000 crores. The Supreme Court has taken cognisance of this and has called for an investigation. I have been challenging Mr Modi for a debate. Narendra Modi Ji the Supreme Court has said that you are indulged in corruption and you have supplied money to Anil Ambani. Come, let's discuss corruption. The nation wants to know about Rafale matter, corruption and demonetisation. They already know about Amit Shah's son. I am saying that the there was corruption involved in the Rafale deal and Modi Ji gave an amount of 30,000 crores to Anil Ambani. Chowkidar don't want to debate with me. Supreme Court will do justice. Supreme Court said that Chowkidar is involved in a theft.)

Earlier in the day, hearing the petition in the Top Court on Monday, the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi observed the following:

"The views attributed to this court in the address made by Rahul Gandhi to the media and public has been incorrectly attributed to the court. Supreme Court at no occasion recorded any such views or made any such observations. What was decided by the court was legal admissibility of certain documents. We feel it proper to seek an explanation from Rahul Gandhi."

Furthermore, the Supreme Court has also given a one-week ultimatum to Mr Gandhi for filing his response.
