After violence broke out in several parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday causing severe disruption and damage to public property, a video has emerged of a speech given by Jignesh Mevani, Rahul Gandhi's ally, in Pune.
The video shows Mevani delivering a speech at the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon in Pune district. On the day following the speech, i.e. Monday, protests broke out in Pune in which one person was killed.
The video captures how just 12 hours before the violence erupted, Jignesh Mevani called for a 'street war' to resolve long-standing caste disputes.
Mevani, who is an elected MLA, runs down the role of Parliament and State Assemblies and says that while Parliament and Assemblies can discuss, caste domination will have to be warred upon on the streets of India.
"If we have to win against the new Peshwas, If we have to take the Battle of Bhima Koregaon forward, then this will no longer be on the basis of electoral politics. Assemblies in Gujarat, Maharashtra can discuss, but the battle will be on the streets. To end the domination of one caste, there will now have to be a war on the streets of this country."
