After fighting a prolonged battle with cancer, chief minister Manohar Parrikar, 63, passed away on Sunday evening.
The politician with an illustrious political career served as the Defence Minister in the PM Modi-led NDA government from 2014 to 2017, and back in 2013 even proposed Narendra Modi's name as the Prime Ministerial candidate for BJP.
Calling him the 'most popular leader' against the incumbent UPA, Parrikar had said that for the party to gain victory, 'Narendra Modi has to be projected for the leader'
He said, "Narendra Modi is the most popular leader, you've said it. He is the most popular leader, so automatically if the party wants to win, then Narendra Modi has to be projected for the leader."
"The possibility of a win increases because there is a comparison of UPA's non-performing government versus people's expectation of Narendra Modi's performing government," he added.
PM Narendra Modi gave a heartfelt tribute to Goa CM Manohar Parrikar following his demise on Sunday. CM Parrikar was 63 years old and was battling a serious pancreatic ailment.
PM Modi, in a series of tweets, condoled Parrikar's death and wrote a tribute in admiration of the former Defence Minister highlighting his work and persona in the public life.
The former Defence Minister was suffering from a serious pancreatic ailment and was at his private residence at Dona Paula in Goa.
Earlier on Sunday, President of India Ram Nath Kovind announced the Goa CM's demise on Twitter saying:
"Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten."
