West Bengal: 11 injured in stampede at Barddhaman railway station

Around 11 people were injured in a stampede on an overbridge at WB's Barddhaman railway station. The injured have been admitted to Barddhaman Medical College.

Around 11 people have been injured in a stampede on an overbridge at West Bengal's Barddhaman railway station on Friday.  Reportedly, the injured have been admitted to Barddhaman Medical College for treatment.

The incident

The stampede occurred when people rushing to board the Barddhaman-Asansol Passenger faced deboarded commuters of the New Delhi-Howrah Poorva Express on the foot overbridge. While the Barddhaman-Asansol Passenger arrived at platform number four at 3.10 pm, Poorva Express entered adjacent platform number five four minutes later at 3.14 pm. The rush to board the passenger, which was scheduled to depart at 3.20 pm, led to a stampede-like situation on the overbridge, injuring 11 people. A passenger commenting on the incident said, "There is only one overbridge between platform number 4 and 5. Work is going on in another bridge, an escalator is being built there. So only one bridge was available for people to commute."

Series of unfortunate incidents during the 'Chhath' festival

In another unfortunate incident, on November 3, A total of 30 people including 18 children died in separate incidents of wall collapse, stampede and drowning in different parts of Bihar during the 'Chhath' festival that concluded on Sunday, November 3, police said. Two women were killed in a wall collapse, two children died during a stampede while 26 others, including 16 children, drowned in different districts of the state since Saturday. The two women who observed the Chhath rituals died and four others were injured when a portion of the wall of a Kali temple collapsed this morning at Badgaon village in Samastipur district.

The wall collapsed at around 6.30 am when the devotees were preparing to leave the ghat after offering 'arghya', Hasanpur police station SHO Chandrakant Gauri said. The injured devotees have been admitted to Hasanpur primary health centre, he said. In another incident, two children aged seven years and four years were killed in a stampede that took place near Suryakund at Deo block in the evening, Aurangabad District
