In the call to save the “democracy” of the nation, Opposition party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, and Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting on Monday. Amid the meeting, reports of Vijay Mallya’s extradition and Urjit Patel's resignation from the seat of RBI Governor came out.

The ‘Mahaghatbandhan,’ opposing the Modi government addressed the recent economic, political developments and shared the excerpts from the Opposition meet.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi elucidated how the purpose of his meeting was to “protect the country’s Constitution and Institutions from the BJP government.”

He said, "This process is bringing together everybody and this process will be carried out in an open, friendly and respectful manner. The voices in this room are the voices of opposition in this country and we respect every single one of them, regardless of small or big they are, respect each one of them. The goal of everybody is to defeat the BJP and protect India's Constitutions and our Institutions.”

While questioned about the verdict of Mallya extradition, Gandhi deviated the topic to Rafale, saying, “Mallya took 9,000 crores from the Indian banking system. Why talk about Mallya? Let's talk about Rafale, where the Prime Minister personally handed 30,000 crores to Anil Ambani. Why does the PM not open his mouth about his friend, Ambani? The former President of France himself said that the Prime Minister (Modi) told us that Anil Ambani should get the contract. So if you want to talk about corruption, talk about Rafale.”

Citing Urjit Patel’s decision to drop from his position as the Governor of RBI as an “assault of the BJP on India’s institutions”, Gandhi called this move as Patel’s attempt to “protect the institution of RBI.”

Gandhi stated,  “In the middle of the meeting(of opposition leaders), we were told that RBI Governor has resigned because he could no longer work with the government. There was a consensus in the room that we've to stop BJP's assault on our institutions- CBI, RBI, EC & on the constitution.  RBI governor is resigning because he’s protecting the institution of RBI. Taking away reserves from RBI to save your skin is an act against this nation. I’m very proud that people from all walks of life and institutions are standing up to it.”

The Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, along with a tweet, gave out a statement stating a financial instability in the country, “We’ll meet the President because financial stability is not there, Reserve Bank of India Governor (#UrjitPatel) has resigned. It is a matter of great concern in this country and the financial emergency has already started.”

TDP’s leader Chandrababu Naidu too gave out a statement saying, “In the middle of the meeting, RBI Governor has resigned. There is so much pressure from the government of India, they are always attacking the RBI Governor. He tried his best to protect the economy and this nation, he was unable to bear the stress and he resigned. This is very bad for the nation. What will happen tomorrow? Already the economy is in doldrums, farmers are in trouble, minorities are insecure. Therefore, irrespective of our political compulsion, we joined here, we want to protect this nation and institution."
