Speaking at the delegation-level talks with India as part of the second informal summit in Mamallapuram on Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping described his visit as a ‘very memorable’ one. He stated that his delegation had experienced the friendly sentiments of the Indians. Xi Jinping further revealed that the idea of the informal summit was originally proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said, “We are overwhelmed by this kind of precious hospitality and thoughtful arrangements that the Indian side has made. Me and my other colleagues have felt that very strongly. We are really overwhelmed by your hospitality and we feel that Mr. PM, the Indian government and the state of Tamil Nadu and the people here cherish friendly sentiment towards the Chinese people, the Chinese government and we really feel your sincere welcome towards us during this visit."
"So, this will be a very memorable experience for me, for us and will have a far-reaching impact for the Chinese people. I saw that the Chinese media has published a lot of articles between China-India relations, about the friendly relations between our two countries. Mr. PM, last year we held the first informal summit. Actually this initiative was put forth by you- Mr. PM and this is a good idea.”
The Chinese President went on to elaborate on the benefits arising out of the Wuhan Summit held in 2018. He opined that both the countries now had closer co-operation.
He remarked, "Indeed, the Wuhan Summit ushered India-China relations into a new stage of healthy and steady development. For the past one year or so, the informal summit continues to showcase visible progress. We have deeper strategic communication, more effective practical coordination, more diverse people-to-people cultural exchanges and we have closer cooperation at multilateral forums. What has happened has proved that we have made the right decision to have this kind of informal summit. And we can continue with this form of meeting.”
He stressed on the demographic dividend of both India and China. Furthermore, he observed that he engaged with PM Modi as a “friend”. Expressing his delight over the discussions so far, he said that he looked forward to holding talks with the full Indian delegation.
The Chinese President remarked, “China and India are each other’s important neighbour. And we are the only two major countries, each with over 1 billion people. Sustaining and growing the India-China relationship is the firm policy of China. Yesterday and early today, you and I have engaged in candid discussions as friends. We have had a really in-depth engagement and good discussions. I am really happy and I have enjoyed the conversations so far. So, I look forward to further discussions in an in-depth manner with you in the full delegation discussions and make further plans for bilateral relations. I may follow up on the proposals discussed yesterday with some responses. I am sure that our discussions will further bring forward our relations. Thank you.”
